Review: Cadbury Mini Eggs vs Marks and Spencer Speckled Eggs

These bags lasted 20 minutes. These bags lasted 20 minutes.

The bunny’s bounding back for Easter, and with him comes the question on everyone’s chocoholic lips: which is better, Cadbury Mini Eggs or Marks and Spencer Speckled Eggs? It certainly keeps me up at night. Here, in this exclusive review for Dead Tomorrow readers, I’ll end the uncertainty for once and for all.

Bang for your buck

To help settle the score, it’s probably best to start with the recession factor: cost. This review looks at the standard bags of Speckled Eggs and Mini Eggs, both cost 99p in Clapham – don’t get ripped off. “Surely one must be duping us with less chocolate than the other?” is probably what you’re thinking, but no – both weigh an equal 100g.

Packaging wise, it’s regular IN YER FACE Cadbury versus mellow yellow Marks and Spencer own brand packaging. To my eyes, the Speckled Eggs packaging is slightly more Easterish, but so far, a draw. Tearing open the packaging reveals a remarkable story of differentiation and its here that the battle really begins.

Selection of colours

Cadbury is the clear winner in the range of colour deparment beating Marks and Spencer with an extra two. Cadbury gives cup cake bakers far more opportunity for decorative combinations. Cadbury Mini Eggs win.

Size of egg

You can’t have failed to notice already, but this picture leaves no doubt. Marks and Spencer Speckled Eggs contain far more chocolate per egg. Speckled Eggs are the ostrich to Cadbury’s bantham chicken Mini Eggs. The disadvantage is that Speckled Eggs may be too large for Easter cupcakes. Please confirm below if you have tried. The advantage is that on eating them individually, you get more chocolate in your gob in one go. Which is better. Speckled Eggs hit those quite literally ‘Mini’ Eggs where it hurts. Size does matter.

Taste

Let’s put it this way: once you’ve had that M&S pack, you won’t go back. Better quality chocolate and that all important ‘chunk’ size mean Speckled Eggs combine to make the ultimate chocolate treat and an addiction that will last until they take them away from us. Boo!

Marks and Spencer’s Speckled Eggs………………………..5star

Cadbury’s Mini Eggs……………………………………………….2star

Ha ha ha LOVE Your mini egg review.made me chuckle-obviously a lot of thought went into the egg testing. I’ve never had the m&s ones but vote Cadburys all the way. Especially on top of the Cadburys nest cakes.to die for. Out of all the small choc easter eggs ie aero,Galaxy, mars etc, which has the best filling?? This has kept me awake at night.can u help? One further question-how many bags of each mini egg did u ‘have’ to consume for your taste test :-p

Love the mini egg review. I am impressed by the levels you went to whilst reaching your conclusion. I shall now HAVE to buy some M&S ones to put your theory to the test. As a professional cake maker, I will also be making some cupcakes with BOTH types to give a fair test.
The bags lasted 20 minutes….was that each? Shows great restraint on your part. ;O)

Charlotte – thanks in advance for using your undercover cake making skills to help the nation decide which is best. If you need someone to double check your cakes, Dead Tomorrow is always here to help. Cadburys or Marks & Spencer, I’m willing to sacrifice myself for the greater good.

Mmmmmm…slight issue with the cupcakes. Unfortunately said mini eggs were consumed before cake making could commence….tut tut. Must therefore go and buy more.

If cupcakes could travel, I would happily send some. Unless eating them out of a box after been treated to a couple of rounds in the back of a post van doesn’t offend? ;o)

By the way, my conclusion is that yes, M&S are mighty fine eggs, and do pack a lot of chocolate into each one. However my heart belongs to Cadbury’s. Now if Cadbury’s could make their mini eggs M&S size, then we’d be talking!
