Review: sex education

Carrots come in all shapes and sizesCarrots come in all shapes and sizes

Growing up I had loads of sex education. During the first lesson at eleven years old I put forward the question, “what happens if the condom comes off inside the woman?” An embarrassed response being, “eventually it will work its way out.” Aged 14 and putting condoms on carrots was all the rage. I loved it, and it set me up for a healthy, educated sex life. Sex is good, it is natural and it is ridiculous that people in the UK find it difficult to teach their own children the basics. With a large number of teenage mums pumping out kiddies in the UK, it must come as no surprise to see a thirteen year old dad in the news this week. How did this happen? Teenage experimentation. Like it or not, you can’t stop that – shouldn’t want to stop it. So again, how did it happen? A lack of sex education. A lack for both the young teen dad and more importantly, the parents. Parents are almost always to blame for these things. Had the parents seeked sex education education, they would have been more equipped to teach their child. Sex education is so much fun and it solves problems. It gets a massive carrot from me. Bring on sex videos, carrots and condoms!

I’m all for sex education and it amazes me to hear that a lot of kids don’t get it. The Dutch seem to have the right idea, alternative sexuality ticked off age five.

It is true that parents must absorb most of the responsibility for the upbringing of the children they bring into this world. Perhaps though it is not fair place all the blame at the feet of the thirteen year old’s parents. I think governent and also the public in general have a responsibilty to create an environent that is conjusive to good parenting.

It is ineffectuve education policy and peer pressure from friends and media that I fear, as the prospect of tackling the birds and the bees approachs.
